About the Program
Upward Bound is a pre-college preparatory program for students in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade in Belen, Los Lunas, and Valencia High Schools. Students must qualify for selection to the program. Once selected, students remain in the program until their graduation from high school and the completion of their first summer of college. The program is academically designed to challenge high school students to develop the skills, study habits, discipline and necessary attitude/motivation required to succeed in high school and college. Upward Bound offers a comprehensive year-round program that is divided into two components: Academic year, and Summer program.
Academic Year
Students receive tutoring in math, science, social studies, composition, and literature with certified teachers. In addition, students also receive counseling and help with study skills to help them improve both grades and self-confidence.
On Selected Saturday sessions, participants are provided supplemental instruction in Math, English, Science, Reading, and Writing. In addition, educational workshops on a variety of topics such as test taking anxiety, interpersonal skills, and healthy relationships that support the health and well-being of UB participants are also provided.
Summer Program
Students participate in a six-week summer program at the UNM-Valencia campus, where they take courses that help them retain what they learned the previous academic year while also introducing new concepts that may emerge in the upcoming school year. Every Friday during the six-week period, students also embark on field trips that expose them to a variety of diverse social, professional, and cultural situations. After the summer program is over, a selected group of students are given the opportunity to travel out of state to visit colleges and universities and get a sense of life and education there. With this knowledge, they will be able to choose the best path for them when the time comes after high school graduation.
