TRIO Student Support Services

Our Mission:

The mission of the University of New Mexico—Valencia Campus TRIO Student Support Services program is to provide 140 eligible 1st generation, low-income and/or disabled students with educational opportunities to include successful completion of a certificate, associate degree and/or transfer coursework to another post-secondary institution. 

Services:

TRIO SSS program offers a variety of services to assist our students in completing an Associate degree and transferring to a 4-year institution. TRIO/Student Support brochure.

Eligibility:

US citizens who are first generation, low-income and/or disabled students. Please include income documentation to so we may determine eligibility.

Students who wish to apply to the TRIO SSS program need to complete the application and submit online to valenciatriosssp@unm.edu. Applications must be complete with all required documents attached. Students must be admitted to UNM-Valencia campus prior to applying to TRIO.

Academic Services:

Academic advisment is essential for students to successfullly work their way throught their educational career here at the Valencia Campus. At TRIO, we strive to make this process as beneficial as possible. We offer:

  • Program selection through counseling and career interest inventories
  • Curriculum advisement
  • Class schedule preparation
  • Frequent monitoring of academic progress and performance
  • Development of time management skills, learning strategies, study skills, etc.

Students should be aware, advisement is a two way street; please take a few minutes to review the advisor syllabus.

Career Guidance:

  • Career decision-making assessmens and occupational exploration resources
  • Workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and effective job search strategies
  • Guidance and referrals for part-time and summer jobs, internships, career employment, and transfer to a four-year college
  • Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
  • Do you know your options, strength's, interests?
  • Do you think being a student is the sum of your life's goals?
  • Do you know the difference between a Phlebotomist and a Polymerization Supervisor?

Financing your Education:

Financial aid is money to help pay for college or career school. Aid can come from

  • the U.S. federal government,
  • the state where you live,
  • the college you attend, or
  • a nonprofit or private organization.

Students may apply for Federal Aid that is need based such as the Pell Grant, by completeing a FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid).
