Summer at UNM-V Brings Students and Community Together
Summer at UNM-Valencia has been filled with opportunities for students, employees and community members to learn, connect and celebrate. From educational field trips and gardening to campus gatherings and live entertainment, the season’s activities reflect the many ways UNM-Valencia brings people together.
Upward Bound Students Visit the ABQ BioPark
High school students participating in the UNM-Valencia Upward Bound summer college preparation program recently visited the ABQ BioPark. Students from Los Lunas High School, Valencia High School and Belen High School took part in the field trip.
The BioPark visit was one of several educational and recreational activities planned for the summer program. Students will also visit New Mexico Tech and conclude the program with a college trip to Phoenix.
Community Garden Continues to Grow
The UNM-Valencia Community Garden has made significant progress throughout the spring and summer. Participants have cultivated several planting areas and incorporated clay irrigation pots, known as ollas, created through Fine Arts.
The garden also received donated planters from Sisneros Manufacturing. A recent barbecue brought students and community members together for food, gardening and a performance by Pop Up Show.
UNM-Valencia Celebrates Pride
Students, employees and community members gathered in the UNM-Valencia courtyard June 18 for a Pride celebration featuring food, games and a poetry reading.
The event provided an opportunity for the campus community to come together while promoting visibility, acceptance and equality.
Campus Kickback Starts the Holiday Weekend
The UNM-Valencia Student Activities Center hosted an All-American Campus Kickback ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.
Students, faculty and staff gathered for food, drinks and games, providing a relaxed opportunity to connect and celebrate together before the holiday weekend.
Valencia Cumbia Summerfest Coming Aug. 13
Summer activities will continue with the Valencia Cumbia Summerfest on Thursday, Aug. 13, beginning at 5 p.m.
The free community event will feature live music, food, shopping and family activities, with performances by Micky Cruz and Queen Selena from Las Vegas.
The smoke- and alcohol-free event will be held at UNM-Valencia, 280 La Entrada Road in Los Lunas. Community members of all ages are invited to attend. For more information contact Monica Padilla at (505) 925-8803.
